Our client is actively seeking an experienced Household Underwriter to join their expanding and busy team.
Job Purpose
Analyse household risks and then to provide rates and acceptance terms or decline the risk, as appropriate and within defined parameters. To also analyse statistical information relating to home loss ratios, and to prepare reports for use by the management team in the assessment of future rates.
The Home Underwriting department acts as a point of reference for all business areas for all underwriting issues relating to the company's home product. The department issues risk control and acceptance criteria for new home business, mid term adjustments and renewals and takes decisions on all cases falling outside the underwriting authority granted to selected operational staff.
Home policy renewal reviews are also carried out by the department and appropriate terms applied in line with the underwriting philosophy, and also rate tables and static data tables are maintained allowing changes to be made to the rates depending on the market conditions.
In addition the claims department will refer cases where there is doubt about the operation of the home policy cover and the department will make decisions on indemnity.
A key objective of the department is to analyse information in insurance applications to determine if a risk is acceptable, and if so ensure the correct premium is allocated, which is commensurate with the risk. Audits are also carried out by the department to ensure that operations employees are adhering to the risk control measures and acceptance criteria, and feedback is then provided to the relevant parties.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Manage the daily home referral audit reports to ensure there is no breach of policy terms/conditions by employees, provide feedback to operations managers and to the Senior Home Underwriter II.
Manage on a daily basis the home pre-renewal review cases to ensure we are collecting the correct premium for each risk and that appropriate terms are applied.
Action and manage the cascade of home underwriting knowledge across the company, by providing up to date technical training material relating to all aspects of home underwriting to operations staff and carrying out training as required.
Coaching and mentoring of other members of the home underwriting team on a daily basis as required.
Maintain close contact with the Marketing department in order to monitor market activity/competitor information in relation to the home account, and report information and make recommendations on possible actions to the Senior Home Underwriter II on a monthly basis.
Handle and resolve day-to-day underwriting queries and referrals from the call centres in a timely manner, to ensure excellent customer service is maintained.
Assist in handling home underwriting complaints received from the call centres and Customer Relations to ensure that these are resolved quickly and efficiently to minimise impact to the company.
Participate in new home underwriting systems and product development and the testing of any new functionality, and also assist in maintaining home rating and product/table structures, postcode updates on TIA in liaison with IT.
Maintain and develop the Home Insurance underwriting guide/scripts in order to keep up to date with market developments and ensure a profitable home account.
Manage and keep the enquiries relating to the CUE register up to date to assist in the prevention of fraud, to include reviewing cases that have "matched" on CUE in order to determine whether to avoid or accept the risk, and if accepted on what terms.
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY
Manage individual home underwriting cases for both new home business and renewals, which fall outside our standard acceptance criteria, making decisions on whether the company accepts that risk or not, escalating if necessary (when would they escalate???).

Communicate effectively to relevant parties within the business any new restrictions/terms/changes in our home underwriting philosophy based on an understanding of risk and underwriting .
Use of influencing and negotiation skills when dealing with specific referrals/queries, as some decisions may be sensitive or capable of causing dissatisfaction from customers.
RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: All levels within the organisation, although most significant and regular contact will be with operations staff
External: Third party supplier account managers, Peers within other insurance companies.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
" Significant technical household underwriting experience in a Head Office environment, Insurance Company or Broker.
" Working towards ACII/CIP qualification, or already qualified
" Good knowledge of home policy terms and conditions
" Good knowledge of flood and other types of risk
" PC literate to an intermediate standard: particularly in word and excel
" Self motivated with excellent interpersonal skills
